Grad Talks

Tired of trying to convince your roommates or family that what you study is interesting? We understand. So that is why we are excited to announce the BYU Grad Talks Series. Similar to another famous series of talks, we want to provide grad students with an opportunity to share your cool research with other grad students. If you need more incentive than knowledge, top presenters will be awarded cash prizes.

1st place - $150

2nd place - $100

3rd place - $50

This presentation does not have to be polished research; it could be interesting preliminary research you had done or a great summary of your field. Some ideas include:

  • How do you really write a dissertation--getting past writers’ block?
  • Lessons from my first year of grad school?
  • Unsolved problems in your field?
  • Promising research area in your field?

There will be a simple two part application process to select presenters.

Part 1: Each applicant will send us a short email to <byugss@byu.edu> explaining why your idea should be chosen.

Part 2: After narrowing the field, prospective presenters will then come to do a quick 5-minute version of their presentation to the Graduate Students Society Council Members who will select the final presenters.

Start mulling over topics and spread the word.

The judging criteria are

  1. Interesting/Broad appeal
  2. Energizing/Passionate presenter
  3. Clarity

The short email is due by Friday Dec. 7, 2012 at 5 PM. Apply Now!

The 5-minute version will be held in January 2013

The BYU Grad Talks event will be held in March.

Please send any questions to <byugss@byu.edu>. We are excited to learn what you are learning about.
